Stratospheric Observation For Infrared Astronomy Ambassadors (SOFIA)
Fall 2012 to Spring 2014
focus: 747 jet retrofitted to house 2.5 meter infrared telescope for flights into the stratosphere; research on interstellar medium, star formation, creation and evolution of the universe; complement to Hubble and other telescopes (terrestrial and space)
my role: participate in flights, work with team of educators and scientists, develop curriculum, bring back learning to other teachers

AT18-07 UNOLS Expedition, Juan de Fuca Ridge CORK dive program
June 28 - July 14, 2011
focus: three week expedition aboard the Research Vessel Atlantis, using the Jason ROV, to eplore the deep sub seafloor crust, organisms living there, and the way water moves below the surface of the ocean floor. The C-DEBI website(http://www.darkenergybiosphere.org/research/juandefuca.html) states this series of expeditions will "evaluate formation-scale hydrogeologic properties (transmission and storage) within oceanic crust; determine how fluid pathways are distributed within an active hydrothermal system; establish links between fluid circulation, alteration, and geomicrobial processes; and determine relations between seismic and hydrologic anisotropy"
my role: assist research team from UH-Manoa in conducting experiments, collaborate with other educators on board in E & O efforts for UNOLS program, develop curriculum and learning opportunities for students and teachers in diverse communities
